Dornoch. Beach perfection.

Dornoch

Sitting on the edge of the Dornoch Firth, the small historic town of Dornoch boasts a tranquil location and stunning scenery. This thriving community sits on the east coast of the north Highlands that runs from the Moray Firth up to Sutherland and boasts a good selection of independent shops, as well as a variety of places to eat and drink.

The town offers miles of golden sand beaches that stretch from Dornoch Point, heading past Embo beach to the mouth of Loch Fleet National Nature Reserve. The town is famed for its impressive cathedral. Founded in 1224, it was restored by the Countess of Sutherland in 1835, and again in 20th century. Scotland’s top philanthropist Andrew Carnegie paid for some of its stained-windows. The town is also reputedly where the last witch in Scotland was burnt in 1722 - a fact commemorated by the Witch’s Stone.

Adjacent to the beach is a Site of Special Scientific Interest that features nesting birds, flora and fauna. The coast is also a favourite with wildlife such as seals and a sizeable population of both breeding and wintering birds.

And for those keen on golf, the Royal Dornoch championship course, ranked 13th in the world, is not to be missed.

The North Coast 500

Scotland’s answer to Route 66, the North Coast 500 boasts epic scenery, stunning coastal views and beautiful beaches. Regularly making the list of the world’s best driving routes, Davochfin Farm lies just a couple of miles off the main A9 Inverness - Wick section which forms a major part of this now-famous road trip.

The NC500 starts in the northern city of Inverness, weaves along the west coast to Applecross and then northwards towards the towns of Torridon and Ullapool. From there, you'll venture to some of the most northerly coastal points in Scotland, passing by Caithness and John o' Groats before heading south again through Dingwall and finally back to Inverness.

Why not stop off at Davochfin Farm as part of your journey. Or, if you have more time, use it as a base. The main points along the route are within a day’s reach of Davochfin. In fact, the farm is a great base for touring the northern and western Highlands whose ruined churches, castles, forests, beautiful beaches, spectacular cliffs, peaceful lochs and wonderful viewpoints make for rewarding days out.
